Building Gradeo: Global Platform for Secure Digital Exams

Overview
Gradeo is an edtech specialising in online assessment with a mission to transform the way teachers assess and students sit assessment through technology.
The platform is designed to help schools and educators move from traditional paper-based exams and preparation to secure, trusted digital assessment. The platform supports the full assessment lifecycle for secondary education – authoring, delivery, marking, and reporting – across both formative and high-stakes summative use cases.
Gradeo works with schools, educators, and content providers to deliver digital assessment experiences that align with formal curriculum requirements while reducing administrative burden for teachers.

The Context
Across Australia and internationally, schools are under increasing pressure to modernise assessment practices. Over 100 jurisdictions are transitioning from pen-and-paper to online examinations.
This shift is being driven by the practical limitations of paper-based assessment at scale, including rising delivery and administration costs, paper and printing waste, handwriting and legibility bias, logistical complexity, and constraints on the types of assessment and feedback that can be delivered.
Gradeo was created to address this gap by providing a purpose-built assessment platform designed specifically for exams and structured assessment, supported by quality-assured and syllabus-aligned test materials.

The Engagement
Gradeo conducted an extensive international search for a design and delivery partner to complement its in-house team. Flexy supported Gradeo with product design and development services across multiple phases of the platform’s build. The engagement was iterative in nature, reflecting the evolving requirements of schools and the complexity of assessment workflows.
The collaboration focused on translating educator needs into a usable digital product, balancing flexibility for teachers with the consistency required for formal assessment environments.

Flexy’s Approach
Flexy Global treated the project as an ongoing product partnership rather than a one-time delivery. Both teams collaborated closely each day, with many requirements communicated as outcomes rather than fixed specifications.
Flexy’s work with Gradeo included support across several areas of the platform, including:
- Product and UX design to support clear, intuitive assessment workflows
- Platform development to enable digital exam creation, delivery, and marking
- Iterative improvement, incorporating feedback from real classroom use
- Collaboration with Gradeo’s team to refine features as requirements evolved

These capabilities support schools in running digital assessments while maintaining familiarity for educators and students.

Results
Gradeo replaced fragmented, paper-based exam workflows with one structured system built for reliability and scale. The result of the collaboration is a digital assessment platform that supports schools in running structured online exams and assessments, replacing fragmented paper-based processes with a single digital workflow.
Gradeo is now used by more than 300 schools across over 55 subjects, supporting a wide range of assessment contexts. In the past six months alone, the platform has been used to deliver over 172,000 exam sessions, with tens of thousands of hours of exam activity recorded. These figures reflect growing adoption as schools continue to transition assessment workflows into digital environments.
While not every outcome is publicly disclosed, the measurable adoption and usage show what Gradeo delivers in practice: controlled execution, reduced operational risk, and trust across the full assessment lifecycle.

Final thoughts
